Revisiting the population vs phoneme-inventory correlation

چکیده
Speculation about the relationship between linguistic and non-linguistic structures dates back at least a century. Sapir (1912) suggested that the infuence of non-linguistic factors (such as topography, climate, fora and fauna, etc) are most clearly refected in a language’s vocabulary, but Sapir also believed that they afect the phonological and grammatical systems of languages. It is clear that certain non-linguistic contexts clearly favor diferential enrichment of the lexicon, evidenced by the uneven distribution of domain-specifc vocabulary in relation to the importance of those domains for diferent linguistic communities (e.g., Nettle, 1999). However, the relationship between phonologies and extralinguistic factors like social structure or population size has been more controversial (e.g., Atkinson, 2011; Bakker, 2004; Hay & Bauer, 2007; Lupyan & Dale, 2010; Nettle, 1999; Pericliev, 2004; Trudgill, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2004; Wichmann & Holman, 2009; Wichmann, Staufer, Schulze, & Holman, 2008).

The present study aimed to investigate of reaction time in terms of phoneme recognition: A comparative study among Iranian Upper-Intermediate vs. Advanced EFL Learners at Institute level. The main question this study tried to answer was whether there is no difference in reaction time in terms of phoneme recognition in Iranian learners at Institute level. متن کاملDoes phoneme inventory size correlate with population size?
Atkinson 2011 finds a significant positive correlation between population size and phoneme inventory size (confirming Hay & Bauer 2007) and explains it by migration: phoneme sizes are largest in Africa, and as societies spread out of Africa and around the world they went through population and cultural bottlenecks and underwent phonological simplification as a consequence. We believe the correl...

This paper describes the acoustic characteristics of Bangla consonants, obtained by analyzing the recordings of male and female voices. First, the duration of each phoneme was identified by averaging both the male and female voice data; then, formant were measured and formant comparison was made for controversial phonemes, which also served to resolve the controversies in the existing phoneme i...

on the set of diphones is quite straightforward in the sense that it suuces to take the phoneme inventory of a language , and simply combine each phoneme with every other one. For example, taking the approximately 35 French phonemes, 1225 phonemic pairs (35x35) constitute the complete and exhaustive starting diphone inventory. On the other hand, deciding on the set of triphones, quadriphones an...
متن کاملITRI-00-33 A MetaPhoneme Inventory
This paper focuses on the sharing of phonolog-ical information in a multilingual inheritance-based lexicon. It explores the possibility of establishing a phoneme inventory for a group of languages in which language-speciic phonemes function as \allophones" of newly deened meta-phonemes. Danish, Dutch, English, and Ger-man were taken as a test bed and their vowel phoneme inventories were studied...
